Book Promotions – My Experience Thus Far

Part of what I received in the promotion: advertising content

The package I purchased included social media coverage, reviews on Goodreads, and various blog spots. I have to say, I am impressed by how much coverage one gets for what didn’t seem like a lot of money. Although not all the reviews I received were favorable, the ones that were put a smile on my face. It’s one thing for friends and family to read a book (and my mom actually didn’t care for this one, haha!), but to hear what avid readers, strangers to me, think about my story. Wow! I was ready for any negativity, but for the most part I received accolades.

Of course, I was waiting for people to compare it to Thirteen Reasons Why. No shocker there. Ironically, I wrote the majority of my book before that one was ever published. In fact, once I heard about Jay Asher’s book, I bought it and read it to make sure mine wasn’t too similar. One thing about being a writer: your great idea will either have been done before or is being done while you’re in the throes of typing your “unique” story. And if that story becomes famous, everyone will consider you a copycat. Sigh.

But I know I wrote mine with no knowledge of Thirteen Reasons Why (or Pretty Little Liars, which I have never read or watched, although people compared my book to that one as well). Jeez, maybe if I’d written mine first, I’d be raking in the Netflix dough instead of living on food stamps and struggling to support myself on minimum wage jobs. Dang the luck.

But I digress. Ahem. So far, I haven’t sold many books from the promotion. Two paperbacks. And I don’t know if that was from the two Facebook friends who said they would purchase it, or two people who saw it mentioned on the tour. But at least I made 5% of what I paid out for the promotion. (A little tongue-in-cheek humor there.) The most important part of this: do I think it’s a good promotion? An emphatic yes. Do I think it will help my career? That remains on the table. But I will keep you updated. The promo, after all, just started.

I’ll keep you updated on sales and if I feel the promotion helped at all. 🙂 Stay tuned.

JULY 26, 1967 The country club was breathtaking in its decorum. The lights were low and lazy, and tissue paper made into large bows hung from the lamps above each table. A table was set at one end of
